How did it all begin?

It all started sort of like a dare back in 1991. A group of heavy guys and a couple of their counterparts were talking around a table and it was decided that it was about time that Denver had a Girth and Mirth club.

Several attempts had been tried in the past, however, had not taken root and failed. What had to take place was a barrage of personal ads in several of the local papers. A telephone number with a message machine was listed and mentioned a new and exciting social club being offered for big men and thier admirers. Over the course of 3 months more than 50 names, addresses and phone numbers were collected.

It was decided to inaugarate the Denver Girth and Mirth chapter on Thursday evening, November 5, 1992. Little did we know at the time that Amendment 2 would sweep the general election 3 days prior. A sense of doom loomed over the event planners. Those who had left their names on our voice messaging were contacted and invited to join the founders for our first club event.

Over 50 gay men of varying sizes, shapes, races, and tastes converged on the rec room of a high rise apartment building in Capital Hill on a rainy November evening. Drinks and eats were available as were a lot of excitement and sociable guys. A survey was available asking those present for their input on what it was they wanted out of the club.

The rest, as they say, is history. Our membership has fluxuated from 50 to 30. We have hosted over 100 monthly socials - most of them at 1290 Williams - The Capital Hill Community Center north of Cheesman Park. We have also coordinated 6 Camporees and co-hosted West Coast Conferences as well as Mid-Continent Alliance Oklahoma City Weekends. In 1999 we were the hosts of the 1999 ABC Confergence at the Adams Mark hotel downtown Denver!
